Picking walnuts and keeping in the shell

Picking walnuts and keeping in the shell

Picking of walnuts is done in late fall. Picking can be started when on most walnuts the green wrap broken and separated of the so-called “lupines”. It is a sign that the walnuts are ripened and then the fruit of the walnuts begins to fall out of those lupines. Cracking of lupines accelerate rainy and foggy weather or mostly wet weather.

The walnut tree usually grown as tall tree so it is difficult to climb when comes time for picking. Picking of walnut fruits in such cases is carried out by shaking the complete tree (by machine) or individual branches (with the help of wooden rods or rods that have hooks on the ends or with classical hitting by long wooden rod on the branches with ripened fruits).

After picking up walnuts from the tree they need to be picked up and separate as soon as possible from the lupines. If among the picking walnuts there are unripe fruits or those whose shell is hard to separate from the lupines, such walnuts must be arranged and left in a dry place for a period of 4 to 5 days to ripe on. After that, they will be easier to remove from their wrap (lupines).

Walnuts are very often dirty from standing on a damp ground or from the remainder of split and / or lupine parts so they need to be washed. Washing is carried out in a quick way, so that in a large container with water the walnuts in the shell are mixed with a wooden stick. After washing, it is necessary to put them spread out them on a thin layer on the fabric in a dry and ventilated room to dry them well.
